COURSE SUMMARY-English 11th Grade Honors
American Literature, a full-year required course, includes composition, grammar review, vocabulary and standardized test preparation, and the study of American literature. The overall perspective of the course views written work as an expression and reflection of an individual’s thought, both independently and in relationship to the society. Included in this study of English as communication is an application of the plumb line of Christianity to the viewpoints of the works examined. The course is organized by historical sequence in order to coordinate with the American history course required in the junior year. The class reads and analyzes selected works from a literature anthology and specific classic novels as well as selected outside reading. Composition, based largely upon the literature studied, stresses the process of writing (pre-writing, first draft, editing, and final draft). Individualized instruction, teacher conferencing, and peer editing are used to correct any problem areas and improve the overall written work. Vocabulary lists are studied weekly with the intent of preparing for standardized tests as well as providing support for the improvement of written/spoken articulation. Creative projects are used to provide opportunities for individuality and, in some cases, to develop oral communication skills.
