First Grade Art
Kindergarteners come to Art once a week for 45 minutes. They are required to wear a teeshirt with their name on the front to protect their uniform. It is a goal of the program to aquaint the students with as many different media as possible. We concentrate on the basic elements of art including line, shape, color and texture. Besides original depictions of the Christmas story copied and made into Christmas cards, a favorite project is the bears made from clay, painted and displayed for everyone to enjoy. First graders come to Art class for 40 minutes once a week. Students are required to wear a teeshirt with their name on the front to protect their uniform. In first grade we concentrate on color mixing, drawing, collage, soft sculpture and printmaking. Some of the important concepts that are addressed are patterns, shapes and texture. Fish are an important subject as the First graders study the sea, its shells and sea life. A real fish is brought into the artroom, painted and prints are lifted from the fish. Fish are viewed coming and going and a large fish is made, stuffed. painted and hung in the classroom. Students are encouraged to express themselves individually and creatively.
