Headmaster's Message
Kids get more instruction in preparation for getting a driver's license than they do a marriage license! The results are evident everywhere. It seems that there are fewer wrecked automobiles than wrecked marriages. It is virtually impossible for government schools and secular private schools to do much about the situation. To train a child towards marriage and parenting requires some discussion about values, perceptions and convictions about roles and responsibilities and a decision about whose values and perceptions will be taught. And, even if an agreement could be reached about such things, what kinds of teachers should do the teaching? Who decides? Who or what serves as the authoritative source?
For more than 30 years, Westminster AcademyŽ has offered a unique course, required of all senior students, centered around the biblical principles regulating marriage and parenting. Not only are the students exposed to the latest Christian literature on the topic, but very basic, practical skills are taught to prepare them for their future family and marriage roles. Students are encouraged to spend time planning with their parents the process which they will use to receive parental permission and blessing prior to marriage. Students are led to discover their God-given personality types and consequently taught methods, with those personality types in mind, of resolving conflicts constructively and how to practice effective listening. The psychological and physiological differences between men and women are analyzed, and the roles and responsibilities assigned by God to each are explored. The goal of the school in this is to do its part to impact a rootless society through the hoped-for exemplary marriages and parenting skills of Westminster graduates as they take their place in that rootless society.
This is just another example of the rich benefits offered to children at Westminster. There is a difference that will extend far beyond the actual years spent in the classroom. |
