Athletes of the Month for 2007-08


January 2008

Boys Basketball: Anthony Sheffield, Sr., forward led the team with 8.6 average in rebounding while scoring an average of 15.4 points per game in the month of January.

Girls Basketball: Lily Holbrook, So., averaged 12 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

Boys Soccer: Tyler Gates, Sr.

Girls Soccer: Jessica Slocumb, Sr., had 2 shutouts and over 20 saves for the season.



November/December

Boys Basketball: Wayne Sears, Sr. guard, averaged 19.7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals per game, while leading the team to a 12-4 start.

Girls Basketball: Caroline Arledge, Sr., averaged 9.5 points, 2.3 assists, and 3 steals per game.

Boys Soccer: Robert McMurtrey, Sr., had 24 goals and 17 assists to lead the county.

Girls Soccer: Kendall Stempel, So., had 5 goals and 3 assists.

Wrestling: Eddie Padrino, Sr., placed 2nd in the Park Vista tournament and 1st in the Cobra Invitational.



October

Girls Swimming/Diving: Jessie Nederlanden, Fr., finished 1st in most of her dual meet events, 3rd place in the region meet in the 100 backstroke, top 16 in the butterfly at the region meet, and 14th in the same event at the state meet.

Boys Swimming/Diving: Joe D’Onofrio, So., finished 1st in the 50 and 100 free in most dual meets, top 8 finish in 50 free at district and region meets, and finished 18th in the 50 free at the state meet.

Football: Steve Eynon, Sr., Aaron Swierenga, Sr., Phil Coury, Sr., Taylor Wilkerson, Jr., Cal Rhoden,, So. (Offensive Line), blocked a total of 687 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.

Volleyball: Leigh Andrew, 8th grade, led the Lady Lions with 58 kills in October. She excelled in service points and digs as well as an 8th grader.

Boys Cross Country: Teddy Hess, Sr., while not as dominate in Cross Country as in Track, has had an incredible work ethic that has helped him be our consistent number 2 runner. Teddy began the month running times in the mid 20 minutes, but everything changed at the Markham Park meet. At that meet he ran a personal best time and finished 2nd overall, just 2 seconds behind the winner, teammate Christian Wackes. Teddy’s intensity has helped push his teammates to some great success, including finishing as Runner-up at the South Atlantic Coast Conference Meet, individually finishing 6th at the meet and making the All-Conference team.

Girls Cross Country: Emily Carlson, Jr., continues to show just how much of am impact she is having on this team. In the 4 meets that were run in October, she was our number 2 runner in 3 of them. In those meets she also continued to improve her time and get ready for the Championship part of our season. At the South Atlantic Coast Conference Meet she helped her team win the Conference Championship by finishing 5th overall, good enough to make the All-Conference team. The following week she backed up her performance running a personal best time at Markham Park helping her team win the meet and improve to a 9-1 record.


September 2007

Girls Swimming/Diving: Patty Kranz, Fr., placed first or second in many dual meets and the WA Christian School meet in diving, which allowed WA to finish in second place. She also placed first in the 11 dive at the Woodson meet. In her first year of competitive diving, she has produced over 200 points for 6 dives.

Boys Swimming/Diving: Tyler Beard, So., set his own 6 dive record three times. He placed first in every dual meet and third in the 11 dive at the Woodson meet, setting a new 11 dive school record.

Football Offensive: Albert Lasley, So,. running back led the 4-0 lions on offense in the month of September with a total of 11 touchdowns. Albert rushed for 665 yards and 8 touchdowns on 62 carries. He also threw a touchdown pass, caught a touchdown pass and returned punt (40 yards) and kickoff (78 yards) returns for touchdowns.

Football Defense: Peyton Sutton, Sr., strong safety led a Lion defense in September that held opponents to average less than 12 points per game. Peyton had 3 interceptions for the month, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in the Lions 41-7 victory over Coral Springs Christian.strong safety Peyton Sutton led a Lion defense in September that held opponents to average less than 12 points per game. Golf: Aurelie Wiriath, So., was the low scorer in 6 of 8 matches with an average of 39.

Volleyball: Kristen Kelley, Jr., a 5’4 setter/RS led the lady lions in kills. She also put up an impressive 144 assists, placing her among the elite setters in Sun-Sentinel's Top Performers.

Boys Cross Country: Christian Wackes, Sr., has taken this season by storm. He has worked his way into the #1 position continuing the Wackes family tradition. So far this year he has turned in a season best time of 19:06 at the Spanish River Invitational where he also finished 10th overall. In his first home meet of the year Christian led the race from the start and was the overall winner thus helping his team win the meet and begin the season with a record of 3-0.

Girls Cross Country: Layna Roycraft, Sr., began her senior year poised to lead her team back to the State Meet. In her final Cross Country season she has already shown that she will be one to contend with in all of our meets. In her first meet of the year she ran to a 2nd place finish with 22:05 leading her team to a 4th place finish out of 11 teams. The following week she backed it up winning the Miami Country Day Invitational with a time of 21:01. That time currently has her ranked 10th overall in Broward County. At the WA Invitational she finished 3rd overall, 21:22, and helped her team finish 5th out of 16 teams. The following weekend at Spanish River she was the runner-up, 21:45, and helped her team finish as the runner-up by just one point.
